Jonathan insists on Single Term Project
Newsdiaryonline Mon Aug 15,2011

President
Goodluck Jonathan
has restated his plan to forge ahead with the single-term
project which has generated a lot of protests of late. The
president’s reiteration of his position came through his
spokesman Dr Reuben Abati
who briefed State House Correspondents at the week.Abati
said, contrary to media reports, that the plan has not been
dropped.
There had
been divergent reports in recent weeks suggesting
that the president may
have suspended or dropped the plan in deference to the public
outcry.But other reports also said
that contrary to such claims of suspension of the plot, the
presidency has been lobbying the National Assembly members for a
smooth passage of the bill when the president forwards
it for consideration.
Initial reports said the proposal may be for a six -year
single term for the president commencing from 2015.But
latter-day reports indicate that the president may actually
propose a seven-year single term for Nigeria's president .His
goal is to put an end to the bickerings that trail re -election
campaigns and self -succesion intrigues. Though President
Jonathan had announced through Abati that he would not be a
beneficiary of the proposal, many Nigerians are very suspicious
of the move and have dubbed it a tenure elongation plot.
The
president’s spokesman also
told journalists that the president will receive the report of
the committee set up to look into the Boko Haram crisis on
Tuesday this week.Given the gravity of the crisis, Abati noted
the report will “not be
swept under the table”.
