Denial, Doubts and  Hope : The Sylva saga continues    Newsdiaryonline  Thur Nov 3,2011

Sylva

The drama over the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa state continues. The governor  reacted today to allegations that he has bribed his way to ensure clearance by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP .Still, many believe the party may just be employing delay tactics to frustrate him out, a logic the governor’s aides say may not be correct. What is undeniable  is that the saga continues unabated.

Governor Timipre Sylva  today  denied reports that he gave  N500m bribe to chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP  to facilitate his long-delayed clearance to contest the party’s primaries .A press statement by Doifie Ola, chief Press secretary to the governor today said: . The allegation of N500 million bribe is not only false, it is also incomprehensible. The question to ask is, how was the money given? Was it brought in cash or through whose account and to whom?

Ola’s statement titled: “Again, Sahara Reporters Lied About Gov. Sylva”  said “Sahara Reporters is at it again! All of a sudden, and in the fashion of a typical hatchet man, Sahara Reporters is out and about with some spurious and illogical report of a yet-to-be officially announced decision by National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).Just when the PDP leadership is in the process of concluding its confirmation of the Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, for the 19 November governorship primary in the state, Sahara Reporters is busy spreading falsehood about an alleged N500 million bribe.’’

The statement continued , “Well, just to set the record straight, no one was bribed over Sylva’s eligibility for the governorship primary. The governor does not need to bribe anybody because he is sure of his credentials and remains confident about the ability of his party to separate fact from fiction in the screening of aspirants. The allegation of N500 million bribe is not only false, it is also incomprehensible. The question to ask is, how was the money given? Was it brought in cash or through whose account and to whom? This apparent last ditch effort by Sahara Reporters and its masters is simply unfortunate.’’

Truth is that there are forces opposed to the emergence of Sylva as a candidate; and those for and against him are locked in a battle for supremacy .In fact, some observers feel it  is becoming increasingly doubtful that the ruling PDP will clear Governor  Sylva. Despite the hopes within the governor’s camp  about the prospect of the party’s clearance, PDP seems to be using delay tactics ,waiting for the right  time to finally oust Sylva.

But one of Sylva’s aides told Newsdiaryonline this evening  that such fears were unfounded. He said the “entire drama and the waiting game would end between now and Friday evening”.He believes it’s just some politics being played out and all the issues would be sorted out.

Many people do believe   any longer that Sylva has any chance of success within the PDP.If he wants to run, he should be looking towards another party or just forget the race, an observer from the  south-south told Newsdiaryonline this evening.
