Professor Attahiru Jega, the presidential returning officer and INEC chairman has declared President Goodluck  Jonathan as the winner of the 2011 presidential elections.Jonathan defeated General Muhammadu Buhari of the CPC , Nuhu Ribadu of  ACN and Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of ANPP among other contestants.

Jonathan goes into the history books as the first democratically elected president of Nigeria from a minority ethnic group in Nigeria.He is Ijaw from Bayelsa  state in the  oil producing.

Hitherto only Ibo (Nnamdi Azikiwe), Hausa/Fulani(Shehu Shagari) and Yorubas(Olusegun Obasanjo; MKO Abiola whose election was annulled in 1993)  majority ethnic groups have produced civilian presidents in Nigeria.
