Africa Regional Coordinator of Teachers Without Borders, Dr.
Raphael Ogar Oko and Mrs. Chinelo Egwumba, membership officer
for TWB in Nigeria were at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Nonwa,
Rivers State to commence the pilot scheme for training of NYSC
members at the camp before deployment to schools.
The program commenced with over 2,600 participants and
presentation featured on aspects of good teaching and how to
write a lesson note. With over 2, 600 NYSC members at the camp,
less than 100 of them have ever received teacher education
training before, but more than 90% of the NYSC members will be
posted to schools. The Teaching Mastery Course for NYSC members
is an initiative of TWB approved by the Director General of NYSC
with pilot scheme to begin in Rivers and Bayelsa States in March
2011. Over 4,000 NYSC members are expected to undergo the
teaching mastery workshop at the orientation camps in Rivers and
Bayelsa states.

The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on
MDGs is supporting the initiative by printing the required
course materials for all the participants. According to Dr. Oko,
after this initial trial, the organization intends to training
other trainers for all 36 states and the FCT so that all NYSC
members will have an opportunity to learn about the basic
teaching skills while at the Orientation Camp. He also stated
the TWB is reaching to State Ministries of Education to ensure
that all NYSC members are provided with teacher professional
development courses at the school levels before being deployed
to the classrooms to teach.
