Reuters raises Fresh doubts over Jonathan's 2011 Presidential ambition- Report untrue says Presidency

By Danlami Nmodu         Newsdiaryonline Tue Aug 17,2010

Conflicting signals are emerging about President Goodluck Jonathan's 2011 presidential ambition. His foot soldiers have been campaigning for him even to the extent of holding  a high profile summit in Kaduna  to mobilize support for him in the North ,all in a bid to pave way for Jonathan  to run.The campaigns so far have been aimed at having the zoning arrangement of the party set aside . But the party failed to failed to dump zoning as it last week, instead issued a double-edged resolution insisting on zoning on the one hand while it urged President  Jonathan to also feel free to run for the 2011

This dubious position of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party , PDP may have begun taking its toll on President Jonathan as  Felix Onuah  the State House Correspondent of Reuters in Abuja  has today reported that the president may not stand for election next year.

According to Reuters:"He is not likely going to run, simply because his party has retained the zoning of the presidency to the north for the next four years," the presidency source said, asking not to be named.

"Though his party said he can run despite the zoning, the party said this because they didn't want to offend him."

Reuters also reported that Jonathan would make his intentions public before the end of August.

"(He) is a man that always ensures equity and fair play, so he may allow the north to have their remaining four-year term if that will ensure peace and unity" Reuters source claimed .

Though Presidency officials failed to respond to Reuters enquiries , the report today ,as expected ,elicited  a strong reaction from the Presidential Villa.A statement by Ima Niboro said the Reuters report was untrue. He blamed unnamed forces for the report. He said Jonathan has not decided yet whether to run or not to run.

The resolution by the PDP  has encouraged Atiku Abubakar and General Ibrahim Babangida to step up their 2011 campaigns.
