Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike
Rotimi Amaechi has directed the Chairman
of Eleme Local Government Area, Mr Oji
Ngofa to demolish the Trailer Park at
the Onne Junction as a measure to ease
the security challenges in the area.
Governor Amaechi gave the directive
today during a Town Hall Meeting with
the people of Eleme at the Council’s
Headquarters, Ogale.
The Governor said the Trailer Park has
to be demolished because it harbours all
manner of criminals, who used the area
as their hideouts and further explained
that “the criminal activities going on
in the area far outweigh the economic
gains which the place provides”.
The State Chief Executive also announced
that the state government would complete
the abandoned Eleme New Town Housing
Estate, which also served as a safe
haven for criminals.
Governor Amaechi, who commended the
Chairman of Eleme Local Government
Council for his impressive performance,
urged the people to appreciate public
office holders, who used public funds
for development purposes because “it is
not all those who seek public office
that go there to perform”.
Answering questions during the
interactive session, the Governor said
Government would begin to look at the
impact of its policies on the
neighbouring communities and directed
the Commissioner for Works to include
drainage in the construction of the
Aleto-Ogale-Ebubu-Eteo Junction road
project.
The governor also authorized the council
chairman to set up a Transitional Youth
Council that would lead to the
constitution of a democratically elected
Youth Council in the area and appealed
to the members of PDP in the area to
work together in order to achieve
success in the forthcoming elections.
Earlier, the Secretary to the Rivers
State Government, Mr Magnus Abe, said
the purpose of the Town Hall Meeting was
to enable the people interact with the
governor as he gives account of his
stewardship in Eleme Local Government
and to allow them make inputs to the
governance of the state.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of
Eleme Local Government Area, Mr Oji
Ngofa, said the people of the area were
happy with the leadership style of
Governor Amaechi, which is anchored on
transparency, accountability and honest
pursuit of people-oriented projects that
have direct bearing on lives of the
citizens.
Mr Ngofa used the occasion to call on
the state government to intervene in the
security challenges at the Trailer Park
at Onne Junction, AP settlement at the
Port Harcourt Refinery and Eleme New
Town Housing Estate to check the menace
of criminal activities as the areas
provide hideouts for men of the
underworld.
The Town Hall meeting was preceded by a
courtesy call on the Oneh-Eh Eleme X,
Emere Samuel Ejire by the governor and
his entourage at his palace at Agbonchia.
