POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN RIVERS STATE

By Jonas Ogunda Okere JP          Newsdiaryonline   Tue Sep 7,2010

We have been following with keen interest the political developments in Rivers State and Nigeria and have been at the fore front for the campaign for credible elections in 2011 and beyond. This is driven by our believe that without credible election in 2011 and beyond, including the deepening of internal democracy in the political parties, the political system will not throw up enough credible men and women to direct the ship of state to our desired destination of economic devetpment and marked improvement in the welfare of the ordinary people of RiversState and Nigeria.

We have of recent however observed with dismay the upsurge in the use of derogatory languages and unprecedented rise in the attacks on persons and institutions in Rivers State rather than on issues by politicians seeking to further their interest in Rivers State come 2011.

Accordingly we would like to advise politicians in Rivers State to be guided by the rules of the game in their utt.erances, a.cti.vitiesand campaigns and most importantly to focus on how they will improve on the peace and development of Rivers State as well as marked improvement in the welfare of the ordinary people of Rivers State whose mandate they seek to secure in 2011 and beyond.

We would also like to use this opportunity to ask Rivers people to be guided by the antecedents and records of politicians in the consideration of their comments, promises and campaigns. We also trust that Riverspeople will be guided by their conscience in their decisions about 2011 and not by empty promises and bogus claims by politicians.

Solidarity forever

For: Rivers State Council of

Trade Union Congressof Nigeria (TUC)
