PDP leaders in the North West zone say
they will not let go the position of
vice president should President Umaru
Musa Yar'adua be unable to continue and
Goodluck Jonathan has to take over the
office of the president . This
resolution was arrived at during a
closed door meeting held in Kaduna
on Tuesday to strategize on the heels of
the crisis over President Yar'adua's
absence occasioned by his failing health
..The crisis seems set for a resolution
this week.
The meeting which lasted several hours
at the zonal headquarter had in
attendance PDP chairmen and secretaries
from Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina,
Kebbi and Zamfara states to brainstorm
and articulate their points for
presentation at the appropriate fora.
Also in attendance were members of the
national assembly including Senator
Muhammed Kabir Jibril from the zone who
were there to brief the party chieftains
on the latest development at the
national assembly concerning the health
of Mr. President and his office?
Though the zonal chairman, Dr. Danladi
Sankara refused to volunteer information
saying he had nothing to tell the nation
now, sources hinted that the meeting
extensively discussed the health of
president Yar'adua, the possibility of
his stepping aside, the choice of a vice
president and of course the 2011 general
elections particularly as it affects
presidential candidate.
According to a source, the zone which
produced the ailing president said in
the event that Yar'adua cannot complete
his tenure due to his health condition,
a vice president should emerge from the
North West zone as compensation.
It was gathered that this meeting which
generated heated debate over who should
be appointed vice president when the
need arises was prompted by what the
zone described as "unacceptable
expression of interest" for the office
by some people outside North West zone.
Even as they have not yet settled for a
particular person, the source informed
that a number of people believed to be
suitable for the office have been
penciled down for consideration.
Similarly, after a careful review of the
present situation, the source disclosed
that the meeting also discussed the 2011
political dispensation and resolved to
struggle for the presidential ticket for
another person whether Yar'adua is able
to complete this tenure or not .
To this end, an insider further
revealed that the zone has decided
to raise funds to kick off their
campaign ahead of time for a 'safe
landing.'
